My Favourite Things

Every year, in late November, I have an important tradition: I watch “The Sound of Music”. It was the first movie I saw in a theatre and I went with my grandmother. Her birthday was November 28th. For some reason, this movie often played on television around that time, and it became a family tradition to watch it. Once I bought my own video, then DVD, I was able to watch when I chose to. So I carried on the tradition.

It’s a sappy old-fashioned feel-good kind of movie (though it is based on a true story and a real people https://mashable.com/2016/02/21/true-story-sound-of-music/#BjHHcbr8lgqz and I love the songs so I love to sing along. It’s one of my favourite things.

What are yours?

I have been suffering with a bad chest cold – actually I’m at the tail end of it – and I was laid low for five straight days. I watched a lot of the Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, but I broke up the monotony with DVDs of other beloved shows.

I rediscovered another favourite: Joan of Arcadia. It air in 2003-2005 and was a family drama. Mom, Dad, three kids. Joan, the middle child and only girl, talked to God. Or rather, He/She talked to her. God would appear as a human – a janitor in school, a little girl in the park, a cute teen boy on the bus – and ask Joan to do something. It never made sense to her, it was hard, sometimes painful, sometimes funny, but always with some good result – not the least of which was to make Joan a better person. Read here for some good insights into the show: https://www.vulture.com/2015/10/joan-of-arcadia-tv-still-needs-it.html

On Day 1 of my cold, I had some energy so I cooked 2 pots of soup: a bone broth and a chunky vegetable. I would mix them, add beans or lentils and some bread or rice cakes. Tasty and nourishing. Homemade soup – another one of my favourite things.

November is almost over and Christmas is on its way. I love Christmas! The music, food, family get togethers, relaxing with friends on cold snowy days. So this weekend, I will gear up and get to it. After all, I have a home to clean, decorations to put up, gifts to buy. Lots to do to prepare for one of the best holidays and occasions of the year.

Most important of all, I will find a few quiet moments every day to celebrate what Christmas really means. What it’s all about. Or Who. Jesus. Emmanuel. God with us. Saviour. Redeemer. Lord of all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC2vHke_dvo

Merry Christmas

Thanksgiving and Christmas are my favourite holidays too. I make sure I see Home For the Holidays with Holly Hunter each November. We also watched some shows for the children.

I too watch the Hallmark Channel. It gives my soul a rest from the tension caused here by our politics. A lot of it is pap, and it does have an anti-urban bias, but I like it nonetheless.

Right now I am getting over a two week old cold that I caught from my visitors. It is so debilitating but what can we do? Lots of vitamin C and fluids are my only sure remedies. Soup does sound good. I will have to muster the energy to make some.

Glad you are here, Vera! Happy New Year. May it bring you health, joy and peace.

Happy New Year, Beth! How lovely to hear from you 🙂 I enjoyed your post part 2 of your NYC adventures. Photos made it almost like being there, too. Take care of yourself and get well – lots of cold/flu bugs going around. Blessings to you and your loved ones in 2019!

You are so right about the bugs going around. Everyone I know is sick. All my guests were hacking and coughing this holiday. Only my husband didn’t get sick!

I am glad you appreciate my NYC pictures. More interesting stuff coming up, I think.

Love to you and your family, again, Vera ❤

Dear Beth, I hope you and your loved ones are doing well during these trying times. All is well in my world, much for which to be grateful – family, friends, a job I can do from home and the technology I need. Creative juices have slowed so I have not been writing much, a bit of journaling for my eyes only. Praying for good things to come out of this horrible situation. Stay well and God bless you!
